ABOUT BUMI SERIES

Bumi series is one of the Indonesian great novels in the fantasy genre authored by Tere Liye. On the About Tere Liye page, we have known about the author's works throughout his life. On this particular occasion, this blog will gladly present the reviews about one of his masterpieces, Bumi series. However, before going deeper to know how worthwhile the novels would be, this part is going to spill a brief information and introduction for whoever has not been familiar with Bumi series.

The series was first published in 2014 with a novel titled Bumi as the first approach. Its launching has been taken hold by Gramedia Pustaka Utama as the responsible publishing house for most of Tere Liye’s books. The main genres built in this series are fantasy, action, adventure, and science-fiction. In its first immersion, barely Indonesian readers enjoyed those kinds of genres.

Momentarily, for readers who are new with this series, knowing the spoiler of the story may feel excruciating. The story is indeed intricate and complex. Tere Liye has made the world-building very detailed, yet scientifically logical to happen in real life. This series begins with the story of a girl named Raib.

Raib had scarce abilities to disappear and some parallel realm fighting technique. She figured out the fact that the world she had been living in was not as simple as it seemed. Later, she knew that she was not originally from Bumi Clan (earth). She started to rove the interdimensional adventure with her best friends, Seli who had kinaesthetic and thundering power, and Ali who was a crazy-rich genius boy from a great-shipping-company-owned family. The three of them evidently faced plenty of thrilling and unexpected experiences during the adventure in many parallel dimensions such as Bulan, Matahari, Bintang, Komet, and Komet Minor. Each clan had been narrated in each novel. Even though set in diverse dimension, the main plot of this series actually led to their struggle to defeat a legendary notorious antagonist called Si Tanpa Mahkota or The Uncrowned One.

For the concise foreword, this part also delivered the names of the characters involved in the series that was mentioned in the review posts. In addition to the Three Best Friends or The Three (Raib, Seli, and Ali) as the main figures in the story, this series also presented both protagonists and antagonists who affected a lot in the plot. They are explained as follows:

  • Selena, their math teacher who apparently was a fighter from Bulan Clan;

  • Av, the kind-hearted central librarian in Bulan Clan;

  • Ilo and Vey, a spouse who firstly helped The Three Friends in Bulan Clan;

  • Ily, the first child of Ilo and Vey who accompanied The Three in their adventure in Matahari Clan;

  • Faar, the elder protagonist woman from Bintang Clan;

  • Ngglanggeram and Ngglanggeran, the twin mutants or Ceros who were parts of a historical expedition four hundred years before, the story of them were told in Ceros dan Batozar;

  • Batozar, a creepy yet gentle man who was a great watcher and one of the parts in Ceros dan Batozar;

  • Uncle Kay and Aunt Nay, a spouse who helped The Three’s adventure in Komet clan;

  • Finale, Arci, Entre, Kulture, the great fighters from Komet Minor clan who helped the Three in their mission to chase after the Uncrowned Man;

  • Hana-tara-hata, the old lady who owned the shrub field and helped The Three with her bees in Matahari Clan;

  • Tamus, the first antagonist appeared in Bumi; and

  • Fala-Tara-Tana IV, the bad man, chairman of the council in Matahari clan

For closing this part, Bumi series practically consists of the main stories that tell The Three’s adventures, such as Bumi (2014), Bulan (2015), Matahari (2016), Bintang (2017), Ceros dan Batozar (2018), Komet (2018), Komet Minor (2019), Lumpu (2021), Sagaras (2022), and Matahari Minor (2022). Besides, there are also some spin-off stories in which other characters were the main figures there, consisting of these titles: Selena (2020), Nebula (2020), Si Putih (2021), and Bibi Gill (2022). In fact, it had been tough for Bumi to get readers’ enthusiasm until the second serial was published in the next year with the title Bulan. However, little by little, this series has been more famed and getting larger readers as it has a broadly storyline up to 14 novels, and it does not even end yet.
